Robert Poe′s earliest memory of performing is singing the Beatles I Saw Her Standing There into a reel–to–reel tape recorder when he was three years old. "I was captivated", Robert says, "by those two little reels spinning on my uncle′s recorder while I was singing. Then hearing everybody cheering and after being fed some cake, I was hooked."
Growing up in Smithtown, New York, Robert was exposed to a wide range of music. "There was never a family gathering where somebody wasn′t singing or playing an instrument," he says. "I would bang on an upside down garbage pail while everyone sang or played an instrument. I was lucky to have parents that loved music. They had great taste.
My dad played trumpet and I would hear him listening to Big Band records like Glenn Miller and the Dorsey brothers. It exposed me to the great crooners like Billy Eckstine, Al Hibbler, Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin. When my mom had her chance at the stereo she would listen to a lot of the R&B, Rock and country music. She would sing to Patsy Cline, Skeeter Davis and so many other records. It was a lot of fun hearing my mom singing and dancing to the Pata Pata."
During his childhood, Robert spent a lot of time locked in his room singing to records. He eventually bought a Mel Bay guitar book and learned to play. While on a lunch break from school, he auditioned and was hired for a European tour as the lead vocalist for the Glenn Miller Orchestra.
Over the years Robert Poe has captivated many fans with his appearances at The Gramercy Theatre, The Living Room, The Bitter End, Manitoba′s, The C–Note and The Cutting Room in New York, and The Bluebird Café, Robert's Western World′s Guitar Café and Third and Lindsley in Nashville. ABC Radio′s Dan Gordon writes: "Robert Poe″s songs have a hypnotic quality that draws you into another world, which of course, is what the best art is all about."
During his stint in Nashville, Robert honed his songwriting skills with some of the best pure songwriters in the world. The result, reviewer Michael Kosser wrote, "is a depth and life–honesty in his songs that work well with his stylish, rangy vocal deliveries. This man is a powerhouse!"
